Hormona da tiróide
Os hormônios tireoidianos, a triiodotironina e sua prohormona, a tiroxina, são hormônios à base de tirosina produzidos pela glândula tireoidea, que são os principais responsáveis pela regulação do metabolismo. O iodo é necessário para a produção de T3 e T4. Uma deficiência de iodo leva à diminuição da produção de T3 e T4, aumenta o tecido da tireóide e causará a doença conhecida como bócio. A principal forma de hormônio da tireóide no sangue é a tiroxina, que tem uma meia-vida mais longa que T3. A proporção de T4 para T3 liberada no sangue é de aproximadamente 20 a 1. T4 é convertida no T3 ativo dentro das células por deiodinases. Estes são ainda processados por descarboxilação e desiodação para produzir iodotronronamina e tironina. As três isoformas das deiodinases são enzimas contendo selênio, pelo que o selênio dietético é essencial para a produção de T3.
