Toxalbumina
As toxalbuminas são proteínas vegetais tóxicas que desativam os ribossomos e, assim, inibem a síntese protéica, produzindo efeitos citotóxicos graves em múltiplos sistemas de órgãos. São dímeros mantidos juntos por uma ligação dissulfureto e compreendem uma parte de lectina que se liga à membrana celular e permite que a parte de toxina obtenha acesso ao conteúdo celular. Toxalbumins são semelhantes em estrutura às toxinas encontradas na cólera, tétano, difteria e botulina; e suas propriedades fisiológicas e tóxicas são semelhantes às do veneno de serpente de viperina. As toxalbuminas estão notavelmente presentes nas famílias de plantas Leguminosae e Euphorbiaceae, ocorrendo, por exemplo, em Robinia pseudoacacia, Abrus precatorius, Jatropha curcas, Croton Gratissimus e Ricinus communis. As toxinas vitais típicas são abrin e ricina. A ingestão de sêmen contendo toxalbumins não é necessariamente fatal, pois o casaco de sementes duras suportará a digestão, a menos que a semente tenha sido perfurada, como aconteceria na confecção de colares, pérolas de oração ou pulseiras, e mesmo assim a toxalbumina provavelmente será digerida e tornando-se inofensivo.
