Ultramicroscópio
Um ultramicroscópio é um microscópio com um sistema de iluminação que permite a visualização de pequenas partículas. Quando o diâmetro de uma partícula está abaixo ou próximo do comprimento de onda da luz visível, a partícula não pode ser vista em um microscópio de luz com o método usual de iluminação. O sistema ultramicroscópio é baseado na dispersão da luz, não na reflexão da luz. No sistema, as partículas a serem observadas são dispersas em um colóide líquido ou gasoso. O colóide é colocado em um invólucro escuro e absorvente de luz e iluminado com um feixe convergente de luz intensa que entra de um lado. A luz que atinge as partículas de colóides será espalhada. Nas discussões sobre a dispersão da luz, o feixe convergente é chamado de "cone Tyndall". A cena é vista através de um microscópio comum colocado em ângulos retos à direção do feixe de luz. Sob o microscópio, as partículas individuais aparecerão como pequenas manchas difusas de luz que se movem de forma irregular. Os pontos são inerentemente fuzzy porque a dispersão de luz produz imagens mais difusas do que a reflexão da luz. As partículas estão em movimento browniano na maioria dos tipos de colóides líquidos e gasosos, o que provoca o movimento das manchas.
