Na universalização da prática de trabalho social é uma intervenção de apoio utilizada pelo terapeuta para tranquilizar e encorajar o seu cliente. A universalização coloca a experiência do cliente no contexto de outras pessoas que estão enfrentando o mesmo, ou desafios semelhantes, e procura ajudar o cliente a entender que seus sentimentos e experiências não são incomuns, tendo em vista as circunstâncias. O terapeuta ou assistente social que usa esta intervenção de suporte pretende "normalizar" a experiência do cliente de suas emoções e reações ao desafio de apresentação. Ao normalizar a experiência do cliente, o terapeuta está tentando ajudar a evitar os sentimentos naturais do cliente de "estar sozinho", ou que "ninguém me entende". Por exemplo, um terapeuta que trabalha com um cliente de 21 anos de idade que está sofrendo rejeição de sua família e amigos depois de admitir que ela é uma lésbica usará a universalização. O terapeuta irá explicar que muitos outros jovens adultos que revelaram sua orientação sexual passam pela mesma rejeição e escrutínio de colegas e pais.

In social work practice universalization is a supportive intervention used by the therapist to reassure and encourage his/her client. Universalization places the client’s experience in the context of other individuals who are experiencing the same, or similar challenges, and seeks to help the client grasp that his/her feelings and experiences are not uncommon given the circumstances. The therapist or social worker using this supportive intervention intends to “normalize” the client’s experience of his/her emotions and reactions to the presenting challenge. By normalizing the client’s experience the therapist is attempting to help avert the client’s natural feelings of “being alone”, or that “no one understands me”. For example, a therapist working with a 21-year-old client who is experiencing rejection from her family and friends after admitting that she is a lesbian will use universalization. The therapist will explain that many other young adults who have revealed their sexual orientation undergo the same rejection and scrutiny from peers and parents.
