Um podcast é um meio digital consistindo em uma série episódica de arquivos de áudio, vídeo, PDF ou ePub, inscrito e baixado por meio de distribuição web ou transmitido on-line para um computador ou dispositivo móvel. A palavra é um neologismo e portmanteau derivado de "transmissão" e "pod" do sucesso do iPod, pois os podcasts de áudio são freqüentemente ouvidos em players de mídia portáteis. Merriam Webster define Podcast: um programa disponibilizado em formato digital para download automático através da Internet. Uma lista de todos os arquivos de áudio ou vídeo associados a uma determinada série é mantida centralmente no servidor do distribuidor como um feed da web e o ouvinte ou espectador emprega software de aplicação de cliente especial, conhecido como podcatcher, que pode acessar este feed da web, verifique se há atualizações e baixe os novos arquivos da série. Esse processo pode ser automatizado para que novos arquivos sejam baixados automaticamente, o que pode parecer ao usuário como se o conteúdo fosse transmitido ou "pressionado" para eles. Os arquivos são armazenados localmente no computador do usuário ou outro dispositivo pronto para uso off-line, dando acesso simples e conveniente ao conteúdo.
