A vulgaridade é a qualidade de ser comum, grosseira ou não refinada. Este julgamento pode referir-se a linguagem, arte visual, aulas sociais ou alpinistas sociais. Pode nunca ser auto-referencial porque, estar ciente da vulgaridade é exibir um grau de sofisticação que assim eleva o sujeito acima do vulgar. Dos séculos XV a XVII, "vulgar" simplesmente descreveu a linguagem comum ou vernácula de um país. Na era vitoriana, a vulgaridade descrevia amplamente muitos tipos de atividade, como empurrar para subir de ônibus, usar roupas ostentosas e outros aspectos de comportamento semelhantes. Num romance de George Eliot, um personagem pode ser vulgar por falar sobre o dinheiro, um segundo porque ele critica o primeiro a fazê-lo e um terceiro por ser enganado pelo refinamento excessivo do segundo. Na linguagem, o esforço para evitar a vulgaridade poderia deixar os personagens perdidos por palavras.
