Neoteny
Neoteny, também chamado de juvenilização, é uma das duas formas pelas quais o paedomorfismo pode surgir. Paedomorfismo ou pedomorfose é a retenção por adultos de traços anteriormente vistos apenas nos jovens e é um assunto estudado no campo da biologia do desenvolvimento. Na neotenia, o desenvolvimento fisiológico de um organismo é retardado ou atrasado. Em contraste, na progenitura, o desenvolvimento sexual ocorre mais rápido. Ambos os processos resultam em paedomorfismo, um tipo de heterocromonia. Em última análise, este processo resulta na retenção, nos adultos de uma espécie, de características físicas juvenis bem na maturidade e pedogênese, a reprodução em um estado neotenizado. Neoteny é uma das três dimensões da heterocromonia, ou a mudança no tempo dos eventos de desenvolvimento: aceleração vs. neotenia, hipermorfosose versus progênese e predisposição versus pós-deslocamento. A palavra neoteny é emprestada da Neotenie alemã, a última construída a partir do grego νέος e τείνειν. A forma adjetiva da palavra é "neotenica" ou "neotenosa".
