Graz é uma cidade no sudeste da Áustria, a capital da Estíria. A cidade está situada no rio Mur, no sopé das Montanhas Styry. Depois de Viena, a segunda maior e mais importante cidade da Áustria. O nome da cidade deriva da palavra Gradec da eslovena para um pequeno castelo. Isto é devido ao fato de que a cidade de Graz foi construída no local de um assentamento eslavo anterior desse nome. A primeira menção de Graz data de 881, quando foi mencionada no documento como uma fortaleza dos governantes de Styrian. A confirmação do status foi a concessão de direitos de cidade em 1281 por Rudolf I Habsburg. Desde a primeira metade do século XV até o século XVII Graz foi o assento da dinastia do Habsburgo de Styria. Sob seu patrocínio nos séculos 15 e 16, a cidade se desenvolveu bem, então, em Schlossberg, a fortaleza foi erguida para defesa contra os turcos. Em 1586, a primeira universidade foi estabelecida em Graz. Em 1809 tive a sorte de assediar os exércitos napoleônicos. Graz é um importante centro industrial, cultural e turístico. Na cidade existem 4 universidades e 2 outras escolas superiores, que atendem mais de 40 mil.

Graz – miasto w południowo-wschodniej Austrii, stolica Styrii. Miasto jest położone nad rzeką Murą, u podnóża Alp Styryjskich. Po Wiedniu drugie co do wielkości i znaczenia miasto Austrii. Nazwa miasta wywodzi się od Gradec słoweńskiego wyrazu oznaczającego mały zamek. Jest to związane z tym, że miasto Graz powstało na terenie wcześniejszej słowiańskiej osady o takiej właśnie nazwie. Pierwsze wzmianki o Grazu pochodzą z roku 881, kiedy w dokumencie wymienia się go jako warownię władców Styrii. Potwierdzeniem statusu było przyznanie praw miejskich w roku 1281 przez Rudolfa I Habsburga. Od pierwszej połowy XV wieku aż do XVII wieku Graz był siedzibą styryjskiej z gałęzi dynastii Habsburgów. Pod ich patronatem w XV i XVI wieku miasto dobrze się rozwijało, wtedy to na górze Schlossberg wzniesiono twierdzę dla obrony przed Turkami. W roku 1586 w Grazu powstał pierwszy uniwersytet. W 1809 roku twierdzę bez powodzenia oblegały wojska napoleońskie. Graz jest znaczącym ośrodkiem przemysłowym, kulturalnym i turystycznym. W mieście znajdują się 4 uniwersytety i 2 inne szkoły wyższe, do których uczęszcza razem ponad 40 tys.
