O bulbo é o estágio latente de certas plantas de sementes, especialmente plantas monocotilédônicas perenes. Consiste em um capo subterrâneo relativamente grande, geralmente de forma globular, com folhas membranas ou carnudas sobrepostas, a partir de um tronco curto. As folhas carnudas têm o papel de preservar as reservas de alimentos, permitindo que a planta permaneça latente quando não tem água e retome seu processo de crescimento quando as condições forem novamente favoráveis. Existem dois tipos principais de lâmpadas. Primeiro, a lâmpada da túnica, exemplificada pela cebola, é coberta com uma fina camada de folhas de membrana, como papel, que protege suas folhas carnudas. O outro, também chamado de bulbo, como os lírios, tem folhas descobertas com uma camada protetora, o que lhes dá a aparência de escalas afiadas. As lâmpadas permitem que muitas plantas ornamentais, como narcisos, tulipas e jacintos, floresçam no início da primavera quando ocorrem condições favoráveis de crescimento. Outras plantas de bulbo florescem no verão ou no outono.
