Hormonul adrenocorticotropic, cunoscut și sub numele de corticotropină, este un hormon tropical polipeptidic produs și secretat de glanda pituitară anterioară. Este o componentă importantă a axei hipotalamo-hipofizo-suprarenale și este adesea produsă ca răspuns la stresul biologic. Efectele sale principale sunt creșterea producției și eliberarea de corticosteroizi. Insuficiența suprarenală primară, numită și boala Addison, apare atunci când producția de cortizol în glandele suprarenale este deficitară cronică, ducând la niveluri cronice ridicate ale ACTH; atunci când o tumoare hipofiză este cauza ACTH crescută, aceasta este cunoscută sub numele de boala lui Cushing, iar constelația semnelor și simptomelor excesului de cortizol este cunoscută sub numele de sindromul Cushing. O deficiență a ACTH este o cauză a insuficienței adrenale secundare. ACTH este, de asemenea, legat de ritmul circadian în multe organisme.

Adrenocorticotropic hormone, also known as corticotropin, is a polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It is an important component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress. Its principal effects are increased production and release of corticosteroids. Primary adrenal insufficiency, also called Addison's disease, occurs when adrenal gland production of cortisol is chronically deficient, resulting in chronically elevated ACTH levels; when a pituitary tumor is the cause of elevated ACTH this is known as Cushing's Disease and the constellation of signs and symptoms of the excess cortisol is known as Cushing's syndrome. A deficiency of ACTH is a cause of secondary adrenal insufficiency. ACTH is also related to the circadian rhythm in many organisms.
