În fonologie, un alfoneu este unul dintr-un set de sunete multiple vorbite, folosite pentru a pronunța un singur fonem. De exemplu, și sunt alfone pentru fonem / p / în limba engleză. Deși alfonetele unui phoneme sunt toate pronunții alternative pentru un fonem, alofona specifică selectată într-o anumită situație este adesea previzibilă. Schimbarea alofonei utilizate de vorbitorii nativi pentru un anumit fonem într-un context specific nu va schimba sensul cuvântului, dar rezultatul poate suna ne-nativ sau neinteligibil. Vorbitorii nativi dintr-o anumită limbă percep, de obicei, un fonem în limba lor, ca un singur sunet distinctiv în acea limbă și "nu conștientizează și nici nu șochează" de variațiile allophone folosite pentru a pronunța foneme singulare.
