Spondilita anchilozantă, cunoscută anterior ca boala Bechterew și boala Marie-Strümpell, este o boală inflamatorie cronică a scheletului axial, cu implicarea variabilă a articulațiilor periferice și a structurilor nonarticulare. AS este membru al grupului spondiloartropatiei, cu o puternică predispoziție genetică. Acesta afectează în principal articulațiile din coloană și articulația sacroiliacă din pelvis. În cazurile severe, aceasta poate provoca în cele din urmă fuziunea completă și rigiditatea coloanei vertebrale.
