Apuleius
Apuleius era un prozator în limba latină. El a fost numitorul Berber și a trăit sub Imperiul Roman. Era de la Madaurus. A studiat filosofia platonistă la Atena; a călătorit în Italia, Asia Mică și Egipt; și a fost inițiat în mai multe culte sau mistere. Cel mai celebru incident din viața sa a fost atunci când a fost acuzat că folosește magie pentru a obține atenția unei văduve bogate. El a declarat și apoi a distribuit un impuls tur de forță în propria sa apărare în fața proconsulului și a unei curți de magistrați convocată la Sabratha, lângă vechea Tripoli din Libia. Aceasta este cunoscută sub numele de Apologia. Cea mai faimoasă lucrare este romanul său picaresc, Metamorfoza, cunoscută și sub numele de The Golden Ass. Este singurul roman latin care a supraviețuit în întregime. Ea relaționează aventurile ridicole ale unui Lucius, care experimentează cu magie și se transformă accidental într-un măgar.
