Un gândac de scoarta este de aproximativ 220 de genuri cu 6.000 de specii de gandaci din subfamilia Scolytinae. În mod tradițional, aceasta a fost considerată o familie distinctă Scolytidae, dar acum se înțelege că gândacii de coajă sunt, de fapt, membri foarte specializați ai familiei "adevăratele șarpe". Speciile bine cunoscute sunt membrele de genul Scolytus, și anume gândacul de păstrăv al europeanului S. multistriatus și gândacul de scoarță mare de scorțișoară S. scolytus, care, asemănător cu gândacul american Hulurgopinus rufipes, transmită ciuperci de boală olandeză. Gândacul de munte de munte Dendroctonus ponderosae, gândacul de Sud Dendroctonus frontalis și rudele apropiate ale acestora sunt dăunători majori ai pădurilor de conifere din America de Nord. O specie similar agresivă în Europa este mopsul Ips Ips typographus. Un gândac mic de coajă, cioplitorul de cafea, Hypothenemus hampei este un dăunător major pe plantațiile de cafea din întreaga lume.
