Mașina de baie a fost un dispozitiv, popular în secolele XVIII și XIX, pentru a permite oamenilor să-și schimbe hainele obișnuite, eventual să se schimbe în costume de baie și apoi să se înmoaie în ocean pe plaje. Mașinile de scăldat au fost acoperite cu cărucioare de lemn îndoite și căptușite în mare. Unii aveau ziduri din lemn masiv; alții aveau pereți de panza pe un cadru din lemn. Mașina de scăldat face parte din eticheta pentru îmbăierea pe mare, aplicată mai riguros femeilor decât bărbaților, dar care trebuie respectată de ambele sexe printre cei care doresc să fie corecți. Mai ales în Marea Britanie, bărbații și femeile erau, de obicei, segregați, astfel încât nimeni din sexul opus nu le-ar fi putut vedea în costumele lor de baie, care nu erau considerate haine potrivite pentru a fi văzute.
