Hans Bethe
Hans Albrecht Bethe a fost un fizician nuclear german și american care, pe lângă contribuțiile importante la astrofizică, electrodinamica cuantică și fizica solidelor, a câștigat Premiul Nobel pentru Fizică din 1967 pentru lucrarea sa privind teoria nucleosintezei stelare. Pentru cea mai mare parte a carierei sale, Bethe a fost profesor la Universitatea Cornell. În timpul celui de-al doilea război mondial, a fost șeful diviziei teoretice la laboratorul secret Los Alamos, care a dezvoltat primele bombe atomice. Acolo a jucat un rol-cheie în calcularea masei critice a armelor și în dezvoltarea teoriei din spatele metodei de implozie folosită atât în testul Trinity, cât și în arma "Fat Man" care a căzut pe Nagasaki în august 1945. După război, Bethe a jucat de asemenea un rol important în dezvoltarea bombei cu hidrogen, deși el sa alăturat inițial proiectului cu speranța de a dovedi că nu a putut fi făcut. Bethe a avut ulterior o campanie cu Albert Einstein și Comitetul de Urgență al Oamenilor de Știință Atomică împotriva testelor nucleare și a cursei înarmărilor nucleare. El a ajutat la convingerea administrațiilor Kennedy și Nixon de a semna, respectiv, Tratatul de interzicere parțială a testelor nucleare din 1963 și Tratatul antirachetă din 1972.
