În fizică, legea lui Bragg dă unghiurile de împrăștiere coerentă și incoerentă dintr-o latură de cristal. Atunci când razele X se întâmplă pe un atom, ele fac ca mișcarea electronică să se deplaseze ca orice undă electromagnetică. Mișcarea acestor sarcini re-emite valuri cu aceeași frecvență; acest fenomen este cunoscut sub numele de împrăștiere Rayleigh. Undele împrăștiate pot fi ele însele împrăștiate, dar această împrăștiere secundară este presupusă a fi neglijabilă. Un proces similar apare la împrăștierea undelor neutronice din nuclee sau printr-o interacțiune de centrifugare coerentă cu un electron neparat. Aceste câmpuri de undă re-emise interferează reciproc fie constructiv, fie distructiv, producând un model de difracție pe un detector sau pe un film. Modelul de interferență a undelor rezultat este baza analizei de difracție. Această analiză se numește difracție Bragg. Bragg difracția a fost inițial propusă de William Lawrence Bragg și William Henry Bragg în 1913, ca răspuns la descoperirea lor că solidele cristaline au produs modele surprinzătoare de raze X reflectate. Ei au descoperit că aceste cristale, la anumite lungimi de undă specifice și unghiuri de incidență, au produs vârfuri intense de radiație reflectată.
