Catechol, cunoscut și ca pirocatechol sau 1,2-dihidroxibenzen, este un compus organic cu formula moleculară C6H42. Este izomerul orto al celor trei benzenedioli izomerici. Acest compus incolor are loc în mod natural în urme. A fost descoperită pentru prima oară prin distilarea distructivă a catechinului din extract de plante. Aproximativ 20 de milioane de kg sunt acum produse sintetic anual ca substanță organică de bază, în principal ca precursor al pesticidelor, aromelor și aromelor. Catecholul apare sub formă de cristale albe, care sunt foarte rapid solubile în apă.
