Chemiosmosis
Chemiosmoza este mișcarea ionilor dintr-o membrană selectivă permeabilă, în josul gradientului electrochimic. Mai precis, se referă la generarea de ATP prin mișcarea ionilor de hidrogen pe o membrană în timpul respirației celulare. Un gradient de ioni are energie potențială și poate fi folosit pentru a acționa reacțiile chimice atunci când ionii trec printr-un canal. Ioniunile de hidrogen vor difuza dintr-o zonă cu o concentrație ridicată de protoni într-o zonă cu concentrație scăzută de protoni. Peter Mitchell a propus ca un gradient de concentrație electrochimică a protonilor dintr-o membrană să poată fi folosit pentru a face ATP. El a legat acest proces de osmoză, de difuzia apei pe o membrană, de aceea se numește chemiosmoză. ATP sintaza este enzima care produce ATP prin chemiosmoză.
