Motor diesel
Motorul diesel este un motor cu ardere internă care utilizează căldura de compresie pentru inițierea aprinderii și arderea combustibilului care a fost injectat în camera de ardere. Aceasta contrastează cu motoarele cu aprindere prin scânteie, cum ar fi un motor pe benzină sau un motor cu gaz, care utilizează o bujie pentru a aprinde un amestec aer-combustibil. Motorul diesel are cea mai mare eficiență termică a oricărui motor standard de combustie intern sau extern datorită raportului foarte mare de compresie. Începând cu anii 1970, utilizarea motoarelor diesel în vehicule mai mari pe șosea și în afara terenului a crescut în SUA.
