Conus
Conus este un gen mare de melci de mare mici până la mari, moluste de gastropod marin, cu denumirile comune de melci de con, conuri sau conuri. Acest gen este plasat în subfamilia Coninae din familia Conidae. Din punct de vedere geologic, genul este cunoscut de la Eocen până la perioadele recente. Conus specii au cochilii care sunt în formă de mai mult sau mai puțin conuri geometrice. Multe specii au pattern-uri colorate pe suprafața cojii. Melcii conus sunt în majoritate tropicali în distribuție. Deoarece toți melcii Conus sunt veninoși și capabili să "înțepenească" oamenii, cei trăiți trebuie tratați cu mare grijă sau, de preferință, deloc. Speciile cele mai periculoase pentru oameni sunt cele mai mari care pradă peștii mici care locuiesc în fund; speciile mai mici vânează și mănâncă viermi marini. Melcii conului folosesc un dinte radula modificat ca un hipodermic și o glandă venin pentru a ataca și a-și paraliza pradă înainte de ao înghiți. Dintele este uneori asemănător unei darts sau a unui harpoon. Este ghimpată și poate fi extinsă la o anumită distanță de gura melcului, la capătul proboscisului.
