Conservatorismul ca filozofie politică și socială promovează menținerea instituțiilor sociale tradiționale. O persoană care urmează filozofiile conservatorismului este numită tradiționalistă sau conservatoare. Unii conservatori caută să păstreze lucrurile așa cum sunt, subliniind stabilitatea și continuitatea, în timp ce alții, numiți reacționari, se opun modernismului și caută să se întoarcă la "felul în care erau lucrurile".
