Separatismul este advocacyle unei stări de separare culturală, etnică, tribală, religioasă, rasială, guvernamentală sau de gen din grupul mai larg. Deși se referă deseori la secesiunea politică deplină, grupurile separatiste nu pot căuta decât o autonomie mai mare. Unele grupuri se referă la organizarea lor ca mișcări de independență, autodeterminare, despărțire sau decolonizare în loc de mișcări autonomiste, separatiste sau de secesiune. În timp ce unii critici pot echivala separatismul și segregarea religioasă, segregarea rasială sau segregarea sexuală, separatiștii susțin că separarea prin alegere nu este aceeași cu segregarea impusă de guvern și poate servi scopuri utile.

Separatism is the advocacy of a state of cultural, ethnic, tribal, religious, racial, governmental or gender separation from the larger group. While it often refers to full political secession, separatist groups may seek nothing more than greater autonomy. Some groups refer to their organizing as independence, self-determination, partition or decolonization movements instead of, or in addition to, autonomist, separatist or secession movements. While some critics may equate separatism and religious segregation, racial segregation or sexual segregation, separatists argue that separation by choice is not the same as government-enforced segregation and may serve useful purposes.
