Ctenophora este un fel de animale care trăiesc în apele marine din întreaga lume. Caracteristica lor cea mai distinctă este "pieptenii", grupuri de cilia pe care le folosesc pentru înot și sunt cele mai mari animale care înotă cu ajutorul cilia - adulții de diverse specii variază de la câteva milimetri până la 1,5 m. În ctenoforii, aceste straturi sunt două celule profunde, în timp ce cele din cnidari sunt doar o celulă adâncă. Ctenophorele se aseamănă, de asemenea, cnidariilor cu o rețea nervoasă descentralizată mai degrabă decât cu un creier. Unii autori au combinat ctenoforii și cnidarienii într-un singur cuvânt, Coelenterata, deoarece ambele grupuri se bazează pe fluxul de apă prin cavitatea corporală atât pentru digestie, cât și pentru respirație. Creșterea gradului de conștientizare a diferențelor a determinat autorii mai recenți să le clasifice în phyla separată. Aproape toate ctenophorele sunt prădători, luând pradă variind de la larve microscopice și rotifers la adulți de crustacee mici; excepțiile sunt minorii a două specii, care trăiesc ca paraziți pe salturi pe care adăpostesc adulții speciilor lor.
