Citoplasma cuprinde citozolul - substanța asemănătoare gelului, închisă în membrana celulară - și organele - substructurile interne ale celulei. Tot conținutul celulelor organismelor procariote este conținut în citoplasmă. În interiorul celulelor organismelor eucariote conținutul nucleului celular este separat de citoplasmă și apoi este denumit nucleoplasm. Citoplasma este de aproximativ 80% apă și, de obicei, incoloră. În citoplasmă se află cele mai multe activități celulare, cum ar fi multe căi metabolice, inclusiv glicoliza, și procese precum diviziunea celulară. Masa interioară granulară se numește endoplasmă, iar stratul exterior, clar și sticlos se numește cortexul celular sau ectoplasmul. Mișcarea ionilor de calciu în și din citoplasmă este considerată a fi o activitate de semnalizare a proceselor metabolice. În plante, mișcările citoplasmei în jurul vacuolelor sunt cunoscute sub numele de streaming citoplasmatic.
