Diocletian a fost împărat roman între 284 și 305. Născut într-o familie cu statutul scăzut din provincia romană Dalmația, Dioclețian a crescut prin rândurile militarilor pentru a deveni comandant de cavalerie al împăratului Carus. După moartea lui Carus și a fiului său Numerian în campania din Persia, Dioclețian a fost proclamat împărat. Titlul a fost revendicat și de cel al fiului supraviețuitor al lui Carus, Carinus, dar Dioclețian la învins în bătălia de la Margus. Domnia lui Dioclețian a stabilizat imperiul și marchează sfârșitul crizei secolului al treilea. El la numit pe colegul său Maximian Augustus, co-împărat, în 286. Dioclețian a delegat mai departe la 1 martie 293, numind Galerius și Constanțius ca caesari, co-împărați juniori. Sub această "tetrarhie" sau "regula de patru", fiecare împărat va conduce peste un sfert diviziune a imperiului. Dioclețian a asigurat granițele imperiului și ia curățat toate amenințările la adresa puterii sale. El a învins pe sarmați și pe Carpi în timpul mai multor campanii între 285 și 299, Alamanni în 288 și uzurpatori în Egipt între 297 și 298. Galerius, ajutat de Dioclețian, a avut o campanie împotriva succesului Sassanid Persia, dușmanul tradițional al imperiului.
