Un elastomer este un polimer cu viscoelasticitate și forțe intermoleculare foarte slabe, având, în general, un modul scăzut al lui Young și o rezistență mare la defecțiune în comparație cu alte materiale. Termenul derivat din polimer elastic este adesea folosit interschimbabil cu termenul de cauciuc, deși acesta este preferat atunci când se referă la vulcanizați.
