Electroencefalografia este înregistrarea activității electrice de-a lungul scalpului. EEG măsoară fluctuațiile de tensiune rezultate din fluxurile de curent ionic din interiorul neuronilor creierului. În contexte clinice, EEG se referă la înregistrarea activității electrice spontane a creierului pe o perioadă scurtă de timp, de obicei 20-40 de minute, așa cum este înregistrată de la mai mulți electrozi plasați pe scalp. Aplicațiile de diagnostic se concentrează, în general, pe conținutul spectral al EEG, adică tipul de oscilații neuronale care pot fi observate în semnalele EEG. EEG este cel mai adesea folosit pentru a diagnostica epilepsia, ceea ce determină anomalii evidente în citirile EEG. De asemenea, este utilizat pentru a diagnostica tulburările de somn, coma, encefalopatiile și moartea creierului. EEG a fost o metodă de primă linie de diagnosticare pentru tumori, accident vascular cerebral și alte tulburări cerebrale focale, dar această utilizare a scăzut odată cu apariția unor tehnici de imagistică anatomică de înaltă rezoluție, cum ar fi RMN și CT. În ciuda rezoluției spațiale limitate, EEG continuă să fie un instrument valoros pentru cercetare și diagnostic, mai ales când este necesară o rezoluție temporală în intervalul milisecunde.
