Nivelul marii
Nivelul mării este utilizat, în general, pentru a indica nivelul mediu al mării, un nivel mediu pentru suprafața unuia sau mai multor oceane ale Pământului, din care pot fi măsurate înălțimi, cum ar fi elevații. MSL este un tip de origine verticală - un punct de referință geodezic standardizat - care este utilizat, de exemplu, ca o referință grafică în cartografie și navigație maritimă sau, în aviație, ca nivel standard al mării la care se măsoară presiunea atmosferică pentru a calibrați altitudinea și, în consecință, nivelurile de zbor ale aeronavelor. Un standard comun și relativ simplu al nivelului mediu al mării este mijlocul dintre un val mediu minim și mediu mare într-o anumită locație. Nivelurile mării pot fi afectate de mulți factori și sunt cunoscuți că au variat considerabil în funcție de timpurile geologice. Măsurarea atentă a variațiilor nivelurilor medii ale mării poate oferi informații despre schimbările climatice și a fost interpretată ca o dovadă care susține ideea că creșterea actuală a nivelului mării este un indicator al încălzirii globale.
