Un aparat de focalizare sau un aparat de asistare, este un membru al departamentului de filmare a echipajului de film, a cărui responsabilitate principală este de a menține claritatea imaginii pe orice subiect sau acțiune care este filmată. "Focalizarea prin tragere" sau "focalizarea cu rack" se referă la modificarea setării distanței de focalizare a obiectivului în funcție de distanța fizică a subiectului în mișcare față de planul focal. De exemplu, dacă un actor se mișcă de la 8 m distanță de planul focal la 3 m distanță de planul focal într-o fotografie, dispozitivul de ajustare a focalizării va schimba setarea distanței pe obiectiv în timpul corespondenței precise cu poziția schimbătoare a actor. În plus, pulverizatorul de focalizare poate schimba focalizarea de la un subiect la altul în cadru, așa cum este dictat de cerințele specifice ale fotografiei. Un cursor de focalizare bun va avea o cunoaștere intimă a teoriei cinematografice și optice. În funcție de parametrii unei fotografii, este adesea foarte puțin loc pentru eroare. Ca atare, rolul unui aparat de focalizare este extrem de important în domeniul producției de film; o imagine "moale" va fi, în majoritatea cazurilor, considerată inutilizabilă, deoarece nu există nicio modalitate de a remedia o astfel de eroare în post-producție.
