Freebase sau baza liberă se referă la forma bazică pură a unei amine, spre deosebire de forma sa de sare. Amina este de obicei un produs natural alcaloid. Baza liberă este frecvent utilizată în chimia organică și în produsele farmaceutice pentru a descrie forma amină deprotonată a unui compus. Majoritatea alcaloizilor sunt instabili în forma lor pură și există sub formă de sare ionică. Sarurile de obicei prezintă o solubilitate mai mare în apă. Counteronii comuni includ clorură, bromură, acetat și oxalat. Datorită ubicuității sărurilor de clor, formate din reacția aminei cu acid clorhidric, acești derivați de amină sunt cunoscuți ca și clorhidrați. De exemplu, comparați hidroxilamină bazică liberă cu clorhidrat de hidroxilamină. Termenul "bază liberă" înseamnă transformarea formei ionice în bază liberă. Se poate referi la deprotonarea formei de sare clorhidrat a cocainei în forma de bază liberă. Procesul oferă câteva merite de extracție bazică acidă. Baza liberă este preferată pentru fumat deoarece punctul de evaporare al bazei libere este în afară de punctul de ardere comparativ cu sarea clorhidrat, ceea ce face ca forma sării să fie mai predispusă la distrugere prin piroliză.
