Froude număr
Numărul Froude este un număr fără dimensiuni definit ca raportul dintre viteza caracteristică și viteza valurilor gravitaționale. Acesta poate fi definit în mod echivalent ca raportul dintre inerția organismului și forțele gravitaționale. În mecanica fluidelor, numărul Froude este folosit pentru a determina rezistența unui obiect parțial scufundat care se deplasează prin apă și permite compararea obiectelor de dimensiuni diferite. Numit după William Froude, numărul Froude se bazează pe raportul dintre viteza și lungime definit de el. Numărul Froude este definit ca: unde este o viteză caracteristică și este o viteză caracteristică de propagare a undelor de apă. Numărul Froude este astfel analog cu numărul Mach. Cu cât este mai mare numărul Froude, cu atât este mai mare rezistența.
