Numele Bisericii Ortodoxe Grecești este un termen care se referă la corpul mai multor biserici din cadrul comuniunii mai mari a creștinismului ortodox oriental, a cărei liturgie este sau a fost în mod tradițional condusă în limba greacă Koine, limba originală a Noului Testament. Astăzi, câteva dintre aceste Biserici își desfășoară serviciile în limba arabă, limba comună a majorității credincioșilor lor, păstrând în același timp elemente ale tradiției culturale grecești. Actualul teritoriu al Bisericilor Ortodoxe Grecești acoperă mai mult sau mai puțin zonele din estul Mediteranei care făceau parte din Imperiul Bizantin. Originile Bisericii Ortodoxe pot fi urmărite înapoi la bisericile pe care apostolii le-au înființat în Balcani și în Orientul Mijlociu în timpul primului secol al lui A.D., și mențin multe tradiții practicate în Biserica antică. Bisericile ortodoxe grecești, spre deosebire de Biserica Catolică, nu au nici un cap de Episcop, cum ar fi un Papă, și să dețină convingerea că Hristos este capul Bisericii. Cu toate acestea, fiecare este condus de un comitet de episcopi, numit Sfântul Sinod, cu un episcop central care deține titlul onorific de "primul dintre egali".
