O hovercraft, cunoscută și ca un vehicul cu pernă de aer sau ACV, este o ambarcațiune capabilă să călătorească peste pământ, apă, noroi sau gheață și alte suprafețe atât la viteză, cât și la staționare. Aeronavele sunt nave hibride operate de un pilot ca avion, mai degrabă decât ca un căpitan ca nava marină. Hovercraft utilizează suflante pentru a produce un volum mare de aer sub corp, care este puțin peste presiunea atmosferică. Diferența de presiune dintre aerul de presiune mai mare de sub corp și presiunea inferioară a aerului ambiant deasupra acestuia generează ascensor, ceea ce face ca corpul să plutească deasupra suprafeței de rulare. Din motive de stabilitate, aerul este în mod obișnuit suflat prin orificii sau găuri în jurul unui disc sau o platformă în formă de oval, oferind cele mai multe hovercraft-uri o formă caracteristică rotunjită dreptunghiulară. În mod obișnuit, această pernă este cuprinsă într-o "fustă" flexibilă, care permite vehiculului să se deplaseze peste obstacole mici fără a se deteriora.
