Hipatia era un filosof grec Alexandru Neoplatonist din Egipt, care a fost una dintre primele mame de matematică. Ca șef al școlii platoniste din Alexandria, a predat filosofia și astronomia. Ca filosof neoplatonist, a aparținut tradiției matematice a Academiei din Atena, reprezentată de Eudoxus de Cnidus; ea era de la școala intelectuală a gânditorului din secolul al III-lea, Plotinus, care a încurajat studiul logic și matematic în locul cercetării empirice și a încurajat legea în locul naturii. Pentru urmașii lui Plotinus, viața rațiunii avea ca scop final unirea mistică cu divinul. Potrivit singurei surse contemporane, Hypatia a fost ucisă de o mulțime creștină după ce a fost acuzată că a exacerbat un conflict între două figuri proeminente din Alexandria: guvernatorul Orestes și episcopul Alexandriei. Kathleen Wider propune că uciderea Hypatiei a marcat sfârșitul antichității clasice, iar Stephen Greenblatt observă că uciderea ei "a marcat efectiv căderea vieții intelectuale ale Alexandriei".
