Fundamentalismul islamic se bazează pe ideologia islamică și este un grup de ideologii religioase văzute ca susținând o întoarcere la fundamentele Islamului: Coranul și Sunnahul. El a provenit din Orientul Mijlociu și, potrivit lui Benjamin Schett, un cercetător independent, a fost răspândit cu ajutorul mai multor puteri occidentale în agende politice. Definițiile fundamentalismului islamic variază. Este considerată problematică de cei care sugerează că credința islamică impune ca toți musulmanii să fie fundamentaliști, iar alții ca un termen folosit de străini pentru a descrie tendințele percepute în interiorul islamului. Exemple de figuri ale fundamentalismului islamic, care sunt numite și islamiști, sunt Sayyid Qutb, Ruhollah Khomeini, Abul Ala Mawdudi și Israr Ahmad. Revoluția islamică din 1979 din Iran este văzută de unii cercetători ca un succes politic al fundamentalismului islamic.
