Jurnalismul este o metodă de anchetă și un stil literar care urmărește să ofere un serviciu public prin difuzarea și analiza știrilor și a altor informații. Integritatea jurnalistică se bazează pe principiile adevărului, divulgării și independenței editoriale. Mediile jurnalistice pot varia în mod divers, de la publicarea tipărită la difuzarea electronică și de la posturile de televiziune la ziare, la internet și la tehnologia digitală. În societatea modernă, mass-media este principalul furnizor de informații și opinii despre afacerile publice. Jurnalismul nu se limitează totuși la mass-media sau la știri, deoarece comunicarea jurnalistică se poate găsi în forme mai largi de exprimare, inclusiv în literatură și cinematografie. În unele națiuni, mass-media este încă controlată de intervenția guvernului și nu este pe deplin un organism independent. Totuși, într-o societate democratică, accesul la informații libere joacă un rol central în crearea unui sistem de control și echilibru și în distribuirea puterii în mod egal între guverne, întreprinderi, persoane fizice și alte entități sociale.
