Scrierea este un mijloc de comunicare care reprezintă limbajul prin inscripția semnelor și simbolurilor. În majoritatea limbilor, scrierea este o completare a limbajului vorbitor sau vorbit. Scrierea nu este o limbă, ci o formă de tehnologie. Într-un sistem lingvistic, scrierea se bazează pe multe structuri ca și vorbirea, cum ar fi vocabularul, gramatica și semantica, cu dependența adăugată a unui sistem de semne sau simboluri, de obicei sub forma unui alfabet formal. Rezultatul scrisului este în general numit text, iar destinatarul textului este numit cititor. Motivele pentru scriere includ publicarea, povestirea, corespondența și jurnalul. Scrierea a contribuit la păstrarea istoriei, diseminarea cunoștințelor prin mass-media și formarea sistemelor juridice. După cum au apărut societățile umane, dezvoltarea scrisului a fost determinată de exigențe pragmatice, cum ar fi schimbul de informații, menținerea conturilor financiare, codificarea legilor și istoricul înregistrărilor. În jurul mileniului al IV-lea î.Hr., complexitatea comerțului și administrației din Mesopotamia a depășit memoria umană, iar scrierea a devenit o metodă mai sigură de înregistrare și prezentare a tranzacțiilor într-o formă permanentă.
