Un keloid este formarea unui tip de cicatrice care, în funcție de maturitate, este compusă în principal din colagen de tip III sau de tip I. Este rezultatul unei supraexploziri a țesutului de granulație la locul unei leziuni cutanate vindecate care este apoi înlocuită lent cu colagenul de tip 1. Keloidele sunt leziuni ferme, cauciuc sau noduli strălucitori, fibroși și pot varia de la roz până la culoarea carnea pacientului sau roșu până la culoare maro închis. O cicatrice keloidă este benignă și nu contagioasă, dar uneori este însoțită de mâncărime severe, durere și modificări în textură. În cazuri severe, poate afecta mișcarea pielii. Cheagurile cicatrice sunt văzute de 15 ori mai frecvent în grupurile etnice pigmentate înalt decât în cazacieni. Keloidele nu trebuie confundate cu cicatrici hipertrofice, care sunt cicatrici ridicate care nu cresc dincolo de limitele ranii originale.
