Killifish
Un killifish este un fel de pește cyprinodontiform ovipar. În total, există aproximativ 1270 de specii diferite de killifish, cea mai mare familie fiind Rivulidae, care conține mai mult de 320 de specii. Deși killifish este uneori folosit ca un echivalent englezesc cu Cyprinodontidae, unele specii aparținând acelei familii au propriile lor nume comune, cum ar fi pupfish și mummichog. Numele killifish este derivat din cuvântul olandez "kilde", însemnând pârâu mic, baltă. Datorită faptului că trăiesc în ape efemere, ouăle celor mai multe killifish pot supraviețui perioadelor de deshidratare parțială. Multe dintre specii se bazează pe o astfel de diapause, deoarece ouăle nu vor supraviețui mai mult de câteva săptămâni dacă sunt în întregime scufundate în apă. Ca semințe, ouăle pot fi trimise prin poștă fără apă. Adulții unor specii, cum ar fi Kryptolebias marmoratus, pot supraviețui în plus din apă timp de câteva săptămâni. Cele mai multe kiluri sunt pești mici, de la unul la doi centimetri, cele mai mari specii crescând la doar șase centimetri.
