Brachiopodii, brazi Brachiopoda, sunt animale marine care au "supape" grele pe suprafețele superioare și inferioare, spre deosebire de aranjamentul stâng și drept al moluștelor bivalve. Supapele brachiopod sunt articulate la capătul posterior, în timp ce partea frontală poate fi deschisă pentru alimentare sau închisă pentru protecție. Două grupuri majore sunt recunoscute, articulate și inarticulate. Brachiopodii articulați au balamale dințate și mușchii simpli ai deschiderii și închiderii, în timp ce brachiopodii inarticulați au balamale danturate și un sistem mai complex de mușchi folosit pentru a menține cele două jumătăți aliniate. Brachiopods, phylum Brachiopoda, are marine animals that have hard "valves" on the upper and lower surfaces, unlike the left and right arrangement in bivalve molluscs. Brachiopod valves are hinged at the rear end, while the front can be opened for feeding or closed for protection. Two major groups are recognized, articulate and inarticulate. Articulate brachiopods have toothed hinges and simple opening and closing muscles, while inarticulate brachiopods have untoothed hinges and a more complex system of muscles used to keep the two halves aligned. In a typical brachiopod a stalk-like pedicle projects from an opening in one of the valves, known as the pedicle valve, attaching the animal to the seabed but clear of silt that would obstruct the opening. The word "brachiopod" is formed from the Ancient Greek words βραχίων and πούς. They are often known as "lamp shells", since the curved shells of the class Terebratulida look rather like pottery oil-lamps. Lifespans range from three to over thirty years. Ripe gametes float from the gonads into the main coelom and then exit into the mantle cavity.
