"Generația pierdută" a fost generația care a ajuns în vârstă în timpul primului război mondial. Termenul a fost popularizat de Ernest Hemingway, care la folosit drept unul dintre cele două epigrafe contrastante pentru romanul său "Soarele crește de asemenea". În acel volum, Hemingway îi împărtășește expresia lui Gertrude Stein, care era atunci mentorul și patronul său. La o sărbătoare mobilă, publicată după moartea lui Hemingway și a lui Stein, Hemingway susține că Stein a auzit fraza de la un proprietar de garaj care a servit mașina lui Stein. Atunci când un tânăr mecanic nu a reușit să repare mașina destul de repede, proprietarul garajului a strigat la băiat: "Sunteți cu toții o" pervertire generată ": 29 Stein, spunând povestea lui Hemingway, a adăugat:" Asta ești tu.
