Orașul se află pe coasta Mării Nordului și este punctul cel mai estic al Regatului Unit. Este la 110 mile nord-est de Londra, la 38 de mile nord-est de Ipswich și la 22 de mile sud-est de Norwich. Acesta este situat pe marginea sistemului Broads și este așezarea majoră în districtul Waveney, cu o populație estimată de 58.560 în 2010. Unele dintre cele mai vechi dovezi de decontare în Marea Britanie au fost găsite în Lowestoft și orașul are o lungă istorie . Este un oraș portuar care sa dezvoltat datorită industriei pescuitului și unei stațiuni tradiționale de pe litoral. Are plaje largi, nisipoase, două diguri și o serie de alte atracții turistice. În timp ce pescuitul a scăzut, dezvoltarea exploatării de petrol și gaze în sudul Mării Nordului în anii 1960 a dus la dezvoltarea orașului, alături de Great Yarmouth din apropiere, ca bază pentru industrie.
