Magnetismul este o clasă de fenomene fizice care include forțele exercitate de magneți asupra altor magneți. Are originea în curenții electrici și momentele magnetice fundamentale ale particulelor elementare. Acestea dau naștere unui câmp magnetic care acționează asupra altor curenți și momente. Toate materialele sunt influențate într-o anumită măsură de un câmp magnetic. Cel mai puternic efect este asupra magneților permanenți, care au momente magnetice persistente cauzate de feromagnetism.
