Medicamentele hipnotice sau soporificante sunt o clasă de medicamente psihoactive a căror funcție principală este de a induce somnul și de a fi utilizate în tratamentul insomniei sau a anesteziei chirurgicale. Acest grup este legat de un grup foarte similar de medicamente numite sedative. În timp ce termenul sedativ descrie medicamente care servesc la calmarea sau ameliorarea anxietății, termenul hipnotic descrie în general medicamente al căror scop principal este inițierea, susținerea sau prelungirea somnului. Deoarece aceste două funcții se suprapun frecvent și deoarece medicamentele din această clasă produc, în general, efecte dependente de doză, ele sunt adesea denumite colectiv ca medicamente sedative-hipnotice.
