Modem
Un modem este un dispozitiv care modulează un semnal purtător analogic pentru a codifica informațiile digitale și demodulează semnalul pentru a decoda informațiile transmise. Scopul este de a produce un semnal care poate fi transmis cu ușurință și decodificat pentru a reproduce datele digitale originale. Modemurile pot fi utilizate cu orice mijloace de transmitere a semnalelor analogice, de la diode emise de lumină la radio. Un tip comun de modem este unul care transformă datele digitale ale unui computer în semnal electric modulate pentru transmisie prin linii telefonice și demodulat de un alt modem la partea receptorului pentru a recupera datele digitale. Modemurile sunt în general clasificate în funcție de cantitatea de date pe care o pot trimite într-o anumită unitate de timp, de obicei exprimată în biți pe secundă sau octeți pe secundă. Modemurile pot fi, de asemenea, clasificate prin rata lor de simbol, măsurată în baud. Unitatea baud indică simbolurile pe secundă sau numărul de ori pe secundă, modemul trimite un semnal nou.
