Efect termoelectric
Efectul termoelectric este conversia directă a diferențelor de temperatură la tensiunea electrică și invers. Un dispozitiv termoelectric creează tensiune atunci când există o temperatură diferită pe fiecare parte. În schimb, atunci când se aplică o tensiune, acesta creează o diferență de temperatură. La scara atomică, un gradient de temperatură aplicat determină ca purtătorii de sarcină din material să difuzeze de la partea fierbinte la partea rece. Acest efect poate fi utilizat pentru a genera energie electrică, pentru a măsura temperatura sau a schimba temperatura obiectelor. Deoarece direcția încălzirii și răcirii este determinată de polaritatea tensiunii aplicate, dispozitivele termoelectrice pot fi utilizate ca regulatoare de temperatură. Termenul "efect termoelectric" cuprinde trei efecte identificate separat: efectul Seebeck, efectul Peltier și efectul Thomson. Manualele se pot referi la acesta ca la efectul Peltier-Seebeck. Această separare derivă din descoperirile independente ale fizicianului francez Jean Charles Athanase Peltier și fizicianului german baltic Thomas Johann Seebeck.
