Peristaltismul este o contracție și relaxare radială simetrică a mușchilor care se propagă într-un val în jos pe un tub muscular, într-un mod anterograd. Peristalitatea se găsește adesea în contracția țesutului muscular neted pentru a propulsa alimentele / chima prin intermediul unui tract digestiv, cum ar fi tractul gastrointestinal uman. Este contracția valurilor de mușchi longitudinali și circulari, precedată de relaxarea valurilor acestor mușchi. Roșii folosesc un mecanism similar pentru a-și conduce locomoția. Cuvântul vine de la limba latină și derivă din peristalleinul grecesc, "de a se înfășura", de la peri-, "în jurul" + stallein, "to place". În mare parte din tractul gastro-intestinal, mușchiul neted contractează în succesiune pentru a produce un val peristaltic, care forțează o minge de alimente de-a lungul tractului gastro-intestinal. Mișcarea peristaltică este inițiată de mușchii netede circulați care se strâng în spatele materialului mestecat pentru a preveni mutarea înapoi în gură, urmată de o contracție a mușchilor netezi longitudinali care împing alimentele digerate înainte. Catastala este un proces legat de mușchiul intestinal.
