În sensul cel mai larg al cuvântului, un filosof este cineva care studiază filosofia. Cuvântul "filosof" vine de la philosopherul grecesc antic, care înseamnă literalmente "iubitul înțelepciunii". Introducerea termenilor "filosof" și "filosofie" a fost atribuită gânditorului grec Pitagoraș. Un filosof poate avea cunoștințe ample despre unul sau mai multe domenii ale esteticii, eticii, epistemologiei, logicii, metafizicii, teoriei sociale și filosofiei politice. Ei pot lega această cunoaștere la discutarea problemelor filosofice.
