Fosforescența este un tip specific de fotoluminiscență legată de fluorescență. Spre deosebire de fluorescență, un material fosforescent nu emite imediat radiația pe care o absoarbe. Vitezele reduse de timp ale re-emisiei sunt asociate cu tranziții de energie "interzise" în mecanica cuantică. Deoarece aceste tranziții apar foarte lent în anumite materiale, radiația absorbită poate fi re-emisă la o intensitate mai mică până la câteva ore după excitația inițială. Exemplele frecvent văzute de materiale fosforescente sunt jucăriile, vopselele și butoanele ceasului care strălucesc timp îndelungat, după ce au fost încărcate cu o lumină strălucitoare, cum ar fi în orice citire normală sau lumină în încăpere. De obicei, stralucirea se estompează încet în câteva minute într-o cameră întunecată. Studiul materialelor fosforescente a condus la descoperirea radioactivității în 1896. În mod ironic, fosforul alb nu prezintă de fapt această proprietate, ci mai degrabă chemiluminescența.
